This piece is named after Finniss Springs, a place close to my heart and my family’s history.
It honours my great-great-grandfather, Francis Dunbar Warren who established a station at Finniss Springs in 1922 and lived there with his wife Laura, an Arabana woman and their seven children.
At a time when Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their families, Finniss Springs station became an oasis and a refuge. When the police came to take their children, Francis forced them to retreat at gunpoint. He protected our people and made sure families stayed together.
The circles represent family, the journey lines are protection and the colours reflect Country.
