This artwork represents songlines and their significance to Aboriginal people. Songlines, or dreaming tracks, are sacred pathways carrying songs, stories, and spiritual knowledge, connecting people to Country and guiding journeys across vast landscapes. These tracks mark sacred sites, waterholes, and pathways created by ancestral beings, serving as cultural passports for generations.
This piece reflects the destination of desert tribes following songlines to the ocean. Flowing blues represent the paradise they reach — the cool, refreshing waterholes, rivers, and the vast ocean that sustains and connects all life. Journey lines and meeting places symbolise sacred sites and a sense of welcome and belonging.
While songlines are deeply embedded in Aboriginal culture, their influence is still evident today. Modern Australian routes such as the Nullarbor Plain, Nepean Highway, and Dandenong Road trace the paths of these ancient tracks, as do iconic songlines like the Seven Sisters Songline, which crosses three deserts.
